Furniture makers are redesigning the traditional reclining sofa. New models hide quiet electric motors and charging ports inside sleek silhouettes, leaving the bulky basement aesthetic of the 1990s behind.

What happened

Architectural Digest recently highlighted a new wave of stylish reclining sofas. Writers Yelena Moroz Alpert and Vy Yang note that modern iterations look like standard living room couches.

They feature hidden technology that operates with the push of a button. Brands like Arhaus and Sundays are expanding their silhouettes to offer extra legroom.

The Castlery Jaron Leather Recliner Sofa costs $3,998. Senior digital design editor Zoë Sessums tested the top-grain leather model.

She described the motorized mechanism as quiet and seamless. The sofa can sit flat against a wall and still recline fully due to its internal engineering.

The Sundays Lift Off Power Recliner is a three-piece modular sofa priced at $4,620. It uses performance fabric and a plywood frame.

Contributor Emily Hein, a therapist who works from home, tested the Sundays model. She noted that each armrest includes built-in USB and USB-C charging ports.

The list also includes the Arhaus Coburn Three-Piece Motion Sofa. That luxury model retails for $9,000, though it sometimes drops to $6,300 on sale.

Why it matters

The classic recliner is shedding its outdated reputation. Brands are merging ergonomic support with contemporary design standards.

Homeowners no longer have to choose between comfort and aesthetic appeal. These couches fit seamlessly into carefully decorated spaces.

AD100 designer Mandy Cheng even uses a similar cozy couch to anchor a high-end Los Angeles family room.

The addition of USB-C ports caters directly to modern habits. Many people now work from their living rooms instead of traditional desks.

The motorized components also eliminate the awkward jerks and wobbles of older manual levers. Users get precise head and neck support for reading or watching movies.

The catch

These modern upgrades come with high price tags. Buyers will spend thousands of dollars for hidden motors and premium materials.

Size remains a significant factor. Sessums noted that the Castlery Jaron sofa is generous in depth and could easily dominate a smaller room.

Return policies also carry steep hidden costs. Castlery charges a 20 percent restocking fee for any returned items.

Buyers must also save the original packaging. Castlery adds a $50 repackaging fee per item if alternate boxes are used.

Sundays offers free delivery and assembly. However, returning their in-home delivery items incurs a $150 flat-rate shipping fee deducted from the refund.

What to verify

Shoppers should check the exact dimensions of their living spaces before ordering. Motorized sofas require constant access to electrical outlets to function.

Delivery timelines vary widely by brand. Sundays estimates a four-to-six-week wait for delivery on its modular pieces.

Shipping fees can also fluctuate based on logistics. Castlery calculates flat-rate shipping per shipment based on the buyer’s location and order subtotal.

Check current sale prices before buying. The Arhaus Coburn sofa frequently sees heavy discounts from its $9,000 base price.

Source trail

Architectural Digest published the original roundup of stylish reclining sofas on June 25, 2026.

The full product review list breaks down specifications, materials, and testing notes for each model.

Shoppers can also review Castlery’s official return policies to understand the exact restocking fees before buying.
