Wall-to-Wall Headboards Dominate New Bedroom Designs

Wall-to-Wall Headboards Dominate New Bedroom Designs

Minimalist bed frames are disappearing from high-end interiors. In their place, designers are installing massive, wall-to-wall headboards that integrate lighting, storage, and nightstands into a single architectural feature.

What happened

The shift marks a clear departure from the low-to-the-ground Japandi slats that recently dominated bedroom design. The previous era relied heavily on stark white percale sheets, Noguchi lanterns, and midcentury alarm clocks.

Maximalist aesthetics are now driving the change toward exaggerated proportions. Andy Cohen recently renovated his Hamptons vacation home using the oversized style in multiple bedrooms.

His designer, Jackie Greenberg, installed a massive pink gingham headboard in his daughter’s room. Vibrant orange midcentury sconces accent the fabric panel.

The guest room features an oak frame intersecting with Andy Warhol wallpaper and a Kelly green stripe. Greenberg notes that these large frames easily anchor a room.

They allow for larger built-in nightstands and free up surface area. Designers achieve this by mounting sconces directly onto the headboard.

The design creates a seamless visual line across the bedroom. It eliminates the awkward gaps between beds, nightstands, and floor lamps.

Why it matters

These oversized pieces solve a common architectural problem. Architect Joseph McGuier notes that many bedroom walls are long and featureless.

A wall-to-wall headboard gives the bed a definitive place to belong. McGuier recently used Schumacher cut-jacquard Tutsi fabric for a massive headboard in a Brooklyn home.

In Paris, designer Hugo Toro built a wall-spanning unit in a 1960s apartment. Toro’s design combined the bed, nightstands, and storage cupboards into one continuous piece topped with a Maison de Vacances bedspread.

Interior designer Alicia Cheung points out that this approach reduces the need for additional furniture. The oversized headboard does most of the heavy lifting for the room’s design.

Hotels are also adopting the trend to elevate basic rooms. The Austin Proper hotel features curved damask headboards with a cocooning shape designed by Kelly Wearstler.

Design firm Charlap Hyman and Herrero took an industrial route. They installed solid wood platform frames at Pocketbook Hudson.

The catch

Getting the proportions right is difficult. Designer Sally Breer warns against making the headboard too tall.

She sticks to a strict one-third height ratio in her projects. Without this limitation, the feature simply looks like an upholstered wall rather than a deliberate furniture piece.

Custom millwork is also expensive and impractical for renters. Tenants cannot easily install wall-spanning wooden frames or hardwire sconces into their bedroom walls.

Breer has experimented heavily with the form to avoid a heavy look. She once built an elongated headboard and nightstand combination entirely out of mirrors.

What to verify

Check current inventory levels at major furniture retailers to see how quickly the trend is reaching the mass market. Brands are already selling ready-to-ship extended platform beds.

CB2 currently offers the Abbott Velvet Upholstered Extended Platform Bed. Arhaus sells a similar wooden version called the Harrow Extended Bed.

Monitor whether the integrated nightstands fit standard bedroom dimensions in typical apartments. Many of these custom examples exist in large vacation homes with ample floor space.

Look for safety guidelines regarding electrical wiring. Hardwiring sconces directly into upholstered, fabric-covered panels requires proper insulation.

Source trail

Architectural Digest reported on the oversized headboard trend on June 25, 2026. The original piece details the installations in Andy Cohen’s Hamptons home.

It also highlights designer quotes and retail options from mass-market brands attempting to replicate the custom look.
