Hiker Trampled by Moose in Colorado
A heart-pounding encounter with nature unfolded in Colorado recently. On a serene hiking day near Crags Trail in Teller County, two folks and their three furry friends got a surprise visit from a moose. Yep, you read that right—a moose!
As the hikers strolled about a mile into their adventure, they spotted a momma moose and her calf. Nature etiquette told them to keep their distance. But this moose mom had other plans.
The moose started moving closer, maybe looking for a hiking buddy, who knows? One of the dogs on the scene wasn’t having any of it. It started barking, and that seemed to set off the moose.
Without much warning, the moose charged, and a hiker got a surprise moose-sized hug. Ouch!
Even after they managed to get the moose to back off, it didn’t seem satisfied with the goodbye. It kept chasing the hikers, like a persistent friend who just won’t leave your doorstep.
Thankfully, the injured hiker, though shaken, could walk away from the moose meet-and-greet. They went to a hospital just to be sure, but it turned out to be only minor injuries.
Tim Kroening, the big boss of wildlife in the Pikes Peak region, had some wisdom to share after this wild encounter. He said, “Hey, folks, respect wildlife and their personal space. Moose think dogs are predators, and they’ll do anything to protect their little ones.”
So, if you’re ever hiking in the backcountry, give our furry and feathered friends some extra room, especially when they’re playing mom and dad. And remember, in the great outdoors, it’s best to keep your distance from the locals.
