Tourists' BBQs Spark Safety Concerns in Harry Potter Village

Residents of the picturesque village of Lavenham, Suffolk, are growing increasingly worried about the safety of their historic homes due to an influx of tourists. The quaint town, which played a role in the Harry Potter film series, has become a hot spot for fans of the wizarding world. However, it's not the sheer number of visitors that's causing concern; it's the unsafe use of disposable BBQs that's igniting worries.

The Potter Connection

Lavenham, located just east of Cambridge, has seen a surge in visitors each year, drawn by the allure of its picturesque lanes, which served as a backdrop in the immensely popular Harry Potter films. Notably, some of the village's Grade One and Grade Two listed buildings made appearances in the Godric Hollow scenes from "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows." One of the oldest properties in Lavenham is now recognized as the birthplace of the fictional wizard, Harry Potter, featured in Part 1 of the film.

Fire Safety Concerns

While the village welcomes fans, the alarming issue is the careless use of disposable BBQs by tourists. The parish council and residents are growing increasingly alarmed by the potential threat to their centuries-old, timber-framed homes, which lack proper firewalls due to their antiquity.

One resident expressed their worry, stating, "The last thing we need is a fire here - almost all of the properties are in terraces, and a blaze would spread devastatingly quickly. Not all the houses have fire walls between them, so if a fire caused by sparks from a barbecue started in a roof, it would be a disaster."

Another villager shared their concern, saying, "We had a chimney fire and we discovered that ours and most other old houses in the village didn't have a proper firewall in the roof. So if rafters catch fire, the flames would spread along the whole street in minutes. These houses are hundreds of years old, and there were no such things as fire regulations when they were built."

Safety Measures Taken

In response to the growing safety concerns, notices have been posted around the village, requesting tourists not to light BBQs. Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service also issued a statement, urging caution and responsible BBQ usage, especially in dry conditions that can fuel fast-spreading fires.

While Lavenham continues to attract Potter enthusiasts from near and far, the call for responsible tourism and safety measures remains a priority for the village's residents, who treasure their unique and historic homes.
