Utah Teenager Receives 25-Year to Life Sentence for Fatal Shooting of Girlfriend

A Utah judge expressed astonishment on Monday at Francisco Daniel Aguilar's apparent lack of remorse for the tragic shooting of his 16-year-old girlfriend, Jacqueline "Jacky" Nunez. The incident took place as Nunez lay injured and helpless in the middle of a road. Judge Marvin Bagley repeatedly pressed Aguilar, now 18, for an explanation as to why he fatally shot Nunez on January 8. The Deseret News reported that the judge believed an explanation was the least Aguilar could offer to Nunez's grieving family.

In response, Aguilar told the court that he acted impulsively and irrationally, fueled by anger. However, he maintained that his intention was only to scare Nunez with the gun and not to harm her. The judge challenged this claim, citing premeditation in Aguilar's actions. He had acquired his father's 9mm gun and bullets before driving Nunez to a remote location about 200 miles south of Salt Lake City.

Despite the emotional proceedings, Aguilar remained emotionless as he replied, "I acted stupidly and out of anger," when pressed by the judge for an explanation. Unimpressed, the judge sentenced Aguilar to 25 years to life in prison, the maximum penalty. This verdict came after Nunez's family delivered heart-wrenching victim impact statements.

Rosa Nunez, the victim's sister, addressed the court and stated that the murder of her sister inflicted a "life sentence of suffering" upon their family. She harshly criticized Aguilar's actions as "unforgivable and pure evil." The Piute County Sheriff's Office press release revealed that the young couple had been arguing on the evening of the incident. Aguilar drove them to a remote location, where the tragic events unfolded.

Aguilar, charged as an adult, pleaded guilty to all five counts against him, including first-degree aggravated murder. Jacqueline Nunez was a beloved high school student and athlete, known for her participation in volleyball and basketball. The sentencing of Aguilar marks the end of a painful chapter for Nunez's family and friends, as they seek closure and justice for the loss of their cherished daughter and friend.
