Author Charged with Extortion in Bizarre Prison Plot Involving Death Row Inmate

A startling twist in the case of a Nebraska death row inmate convicted of a gruesome murder has emerged. Samantha Al-Rekabi, a true-crime author researching a 2017 murder, now faces felony theft by extortion charges in connection with her alleged involvement in a $25,000 extortion plot against a prison nurse, according to local reports.

The murder in question involves Aubrey Trail, a 56-year-old who was convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of 24-year-old Sydney Loofe. Prosecutors described a horrific crime where Trail strangled Loofe with an electrical cord and dismembered her body into 14 pieces, which he scattered along rural Nebraska roadsides.

The story took a bizarre turn as it was revealed that Trail's girlfriend had connected with Loofe on Tinder and solicited both her and Trail for group sex.

In her pursuit of information for her true-crime book, Al-Rekabi developed a relationship with Trail. They also befriended the prison nurse, both considering themselves "true crime buffs," according to court documents.

In 2021, Trail allegedly began manipulating the nurse, claiming he hired a hitman to kill her husband unless she paid him $25,000. He also convinced her to smuggle contraband into the prison, including a phone, chewing tobacco, and a firearm.

Phone calls obtained by authorities revealed Trail's chilling words, "bring me a gun so I can just kill everybody."

Al-Rekabi was reportedly present when the nurse withdrew the money from her bank account, and she later claimed that Trail manipulated her into participating in the extortion plot out of fear for her safety and that of her son, who was also an inmate.

In a bizarre twist, Trail and Al-Rekabi discussed the compromised staff member's desire to have her husband killed to prevent him from claiming her pension through divorce.

Although phone calls between Al-Rekabi and Trail appeared to include jokes about the extortion, the gravity of the situation is undeniable.

Al-Rekabi appeared in Lancaster County court and is currently held on $5,000 bond, leaving many questioning the depths of her involvement in this dark and twisted tale.
