Canadian Travel Advisory for LGBTQ+ Travelers to the United States

The Canadian government is cautioning LGBTQ+ travelers heading to the United States about new state laws that could impact their rights. The warning comes as certain states introduce laws limiting transgender and gay individuals.

Global Affairs Canada, the country's foreign affairs department, has added a notice to their travel advisory list for the U.S., which already included warnings about gun violence and terrorism.

"Some states have passed laws that may affect 2SLGBTQI+ persons," the notice states. The term "2S" represents two-spirit, an Indigenous concept for those embodying both masculine and feminine spirits.

Jérémie Bérubé, spokesperson for the department, explained that this update is due to some U.S. states banning drag shows, limiting transgender care, and restricting participation in sports. Specific states were not mentioned.

Bérubé underlined that this advisory, like others, is based on thorough analysis, including input from Canadian diplomats on the field.

While it's unclear if any Canadians have sought help due to recent laws, attention has been on moves in states like Florida, which have sparked concerns about LGBTQ+ rights and hate crimes. Human Rights Campaign tracked over 500 bills targeting LGBTQ+ rights this year in state legislatures, with 70 becoming law.

Helen Kennedy, executive director of Egale Canada, an LGBTQ+ rights group, praised the government's move, noting that it shows even close neighbors can be unwelcoming.

Unlike the U.S., Canada has maintained strong LGBTQ+ rights with significant legal protection. Though some policy changes have occurred in certain provinces, they haven't gained widespread support.

The travel advisory for LGBTQ+ travelers to the U.S. remains at the lowest threat level but reflects similar advisories for other countries, albeit with stronger wording. It also links to general safety guidance for LGBTQ+ travelers.

States like Florida, popular destinations for Canadians, have enacted these laws. As a result, LGBTQ+ Canadians are questioning where to spend their travel funds.
