According to authorities, a Texas man, Shubhankar Kawle, has been handed a six-and-a-half-year prison sentence for the brutal torture of at least two cats.
Kawle, 28, was found guilty of third-degree felony cruelty to non-livestock animals. He was arrested on October 20, 2021, at the University of Texas at Dallas, where he was a student.
The investigation began when a resident in Quinlan noticed their cats were sustaining unusual and severe injuries. One of the cats even required a leg amputation due to the extent of its injuries.
To uncover the source of the injuries, the cat owner set up a nanny cam. Shockingly, the footage revealed Kawle torturing one of the cats for a distressing five hours on October 9, 2021.
The tortured cat, Nimbus, suffered severe injuries that she had to be euthanized. The jury watched a video of the torture during the trial.
During the investigation, the Hunt County Sheriff's Office identified various signs of extreme abuse at Kawle's residence, including stains on the walls and a metal rod. They also obtained radiographs and medical history from the veterinary clinic that had to humanely euthanize the cat.
Forensic experts from the SPCA of Texas examined the evidence and confirmed that the cat's injuries matched the abuse captured on video.
The Hunt County Sheriff's Office was alerted to Kawle's actions after a concerned citizen reported their cats being harmed.
Kawle was taken into custody following the sentencing. He had been initially arrested in 2021 and was released on a $50,000 bond.
Courtney Burns, Chief Investigator at the SPCA of Texas, expressed her dismay at the situation, stating, "Torturing an animal is inhumane and illegal, and what Mr. Kawle did to Nimbus was not only horrific and heartbreaking, but one of the single worst cases of animal torture I’ve seen in my career. I'm pleased to see the perpetrator of this heinous crime brought to justice."
