Pigeon Takes the Spotlight at Venice Film Festival Opening Day

Hollywood celebrities might need to step aside because a new sensation stole the show at the 80th Venice International Film Festival – and it's not an actor or actress. On August 30, during the festival's grand opening, a pigeon made an unexpected appearance on the red carpet. Photographers captured the moment as if the pigeon were a famous star.

The surprise visitor quickly became a sensation on social media. People couldn't resist sharing their amusement. One person on social media commented, "The Venice Film Festival pigeon is absolutely slaying." Another added, "It's fun to watch pigeons do human-like things, like crossing the street at a crosswalk."

Celebrity Showdown Amidst Film Festival

The Italian film festival has stirred some controversy due to its timing during an ongoing labor strike by SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists). The strike's rules prohibit union members from working on or promoting their past, present, and future projects. Some celebrities attending the Venice International Film Festival could have been seen as "scabbing," breaking the rules, if not for a special waiver.

SAG-AFTRA recently allowed stars to attend the festival to promote independent film and TV projects, as long as these projects were not produced by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). Disagreements over streaming residuals, fair wages, and artificial intelligence have brought negotiations between the union and AMPTP to a standstill. The strike's organizers emphasized that actors supporting indie projects at the festival were not undermining the strike.

Support and Solidarity During Strikes

The dual strikes by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and SAG-AFTRA have caused numerous productions to pause, except for those that have received special approval to continue filming. The Writers Guild of America initiated the strike after disputes with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers in May 2023.

In response to criticism faced by members participating in projects under an Interim Agreement, the union stated, "To be crystal clear, once an agreement is in place, we fully encourage all of our SAG-AFTRA members to work under that agreement AND to promote work made under that agreement." The union emphasized that supporting projects made under the Interim Agreement is essential to strengthen their position.

Actor Adam Driver, at a press conference during the festival, expressed his support for the strikes. He proudly represented a film not associated with the AMPTP and advocated for the interim agreement endorsed by SAG leadership. He questioned why smaller distribution companies could meet SAG's demands, while larger companies like Netflix and Amazon could not.

Driver concluded, "Every time people from SAG go and support a movie that has met the terms of the interim agreement, it just makes it more obvious that these people are willing to support the people they collaborate with, and the others are not."
