Gas Leak Forces Evacuation in Southern California

Early Thursday morning, a neighborhood in Southern California faced a big problem – a natural gas leak. People had to leave their homes for over six hours because of it. That's a long time!

The trouble began around 1:30 a.m. in West Whittier, a place about 10 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. Imagine being woken up in the middle of the night by a gas leak!

Authorities figured out that the gas was escaping from a 3-inch underground pipe. So, they quickly sent a team to fix it, as they should.

Around 75 folks had to go to a special place called an "evacuation center" set up at a school. Can you imagine leaving your cozy bed to go to school at that hour?

Thankfully, by 8 a.m., people were allowed to go back home. No one got hurt, which is a relief. But here's the tricky part: they're still trying to find out why the gas leak happened in the first place. Investigations are ongoing.
