Seattle Officer Investigated for Laughing About Fatal Accident

A Seattle police officer is now under scrutiny following a disturbing incident in which he was recorded laughing about a tragic accident involving a woman who lost her life after being struck by a police vehicle.

The Tragic Incident

In January, 23-year-old Jaahnavi Kandula tragically lost her life when she was hit by a police car driven by Officer Kevin Dave while crossing a road.

The Alarming Reaction

Officer Daniel Auderer, who responded to the incident, was caught on bodycam footage sharing details of the accident and shockingly laughing about the value of Ms. Kandula's life.

"He was going 50mph, that's not reckless for a trained driver," Mr. Auderer, a leader in the Seattle Police Department union, commented, seemingly justifying the speed of the police car.

According to reports by The Seattle Times, the officer driving the car was actually going at 74mph while responding to an overdose call. The impact of the collision sent Ms. Kandula flying more than 100ft (30m).

"But she is dead," Mr. Auderer laughed before making a heartless remark, saying, "Just write a cheque. She was 26 anyway. She had limited value."

Investigation Underway

The Seattle Police have handed this disturbing matter over to the Office of Police Accountability. They are looking into the context in which these statements were made and whether any department policies were violated.

A Troubling Admission

Mr. Auderer eventually reported himself upon realizing that his comments had been recorded. The Community Police Commission referred to the audio recording as "heartbreaking and shockingly insensitive."

Officer's Explanation

In a written statement, Mr. Auderer tried to explain his comments, stating that they were not made with "malice or a hard heart." He claimed they were intended to mimic how lawyers might attempt to minimize liability in such incidents.

"I laughed at the ridiculousness of how these incidents are litigated, and the ridiculousness of how I watched these incidents play out as two parties bargain over a tragedy," he wrote.

However, he acknowledged that anyone listening to his side of the conversation alone "would rightfully believe I was being insensitive to the loss of human life."

A Family's Grief

Ms. Kandula's family expressed their grief, emphasizing that "a life is a life." They also questioned whether the families of these officers would feel the same way if their daughters and granddaughters were in a similar situation.
