String of Robberies Targeting Elderly Asian Community Members in Seattle Investigated

Detectives in Seattle are currently investigating a series of robberies that have targeted mostly elderly Asian members of the community. Despite concerns, the police have clarified that these incidents are not being treated as hate crimes.

Seattle Police Lieutenant John O’Neil emphasized during a news conference that the recent robberies are not categorized as hate crimes. He clarified, "They're targeting vulnerable adults in our community."

A reporter questioned, "How do you know it's not a hate crime?"

O’Neil responded, "Hate crimes are targeted against people because of their ethnicity, and this is more about people they think are easy targets, and that's what we're finding so far."

Increasing Incidents

Since June, the police have received reports of 14 incidents, with eight of them occurring in August alone. A majority of these incidents (13 out of 14) have involved elderly Asian community members. Law enforcement officials suspect that the same group of suspects might be responsible for this string of robberies.

Officer Judinna Gulpan stated, "It's a group of three to seven Black males in their teens. The suspects are armed, and they are targeting elderly Asians within our communities within the south precinct."

Robbery Details

The suspects approach their victims outside their homes and sometimes force their way inside. They mainly target valuable items like jewelry and significant amounts of cash. The suspects are believed to escape in a Kia or Hyundai vehicle.

"They're going after people they think are easy targets," reiterated O’Neil, while reassuring the public that the police are taking substantial measures to discourage criminal activities.

Surveillance Footage

In one of the recent daylight robberies, captured by home surveillance video, two masked suspects approached a male victim from behind as he stood in front of a home. One of the suspects held the victim at gunpoint, demanding his wallet, while the second suspect used a stun weapon on the victim. The victim collapsed to the ground, and the suspects proceeded to search his pockets and attempt to remove jewelry from his fingers.

It remains uncertain whether this particular group is connected to the latest robbery, as investigations are still ongoing.

Police Presence

Seattle Police Department is currently facing a shortage of over 600 officers, which is impacting police presence on the streets, according to Lieutenant O’Neil.
