Tragedy Strikes as High School Senior Fatally Struck by School Bus

In a heartbreaking incident early Monday, a 17-year-old high school senior lost his life when he was struck by a school bus in Florida. The unfortunate event unfolded just before 7 a.m. near the entrance of Lake Minneola High School in Clermont, according to both authorities and school district officials.

The young teenager had been riding his bicycle on the sidewalk of Hancock Road as he approached an intersection with a stop sign. He then entered a marked crosswalk, a moment that turned tragic, as described in a news release from the Florida Highway Patrol obtained by FOX35 Orlando.

The school bus, operated by a 78-year-old female driver, was traveling southbound on Hancock Road. As she executed a left turn, she failed to spot the teenager within the crosswalk. In a last-minute attempt to evade the collision, she swerved left, ultimately colliding with the student and veering off the road.

Tragically, the teenager succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a hospital, though his identity remains undisclosed.

Remarkably, the school bus driver, along with two passengers, a 55-year-old woman and an 18-year-old woman, emerged unscathed from the accident.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office expressed its deepest condolences, stating, "Our sincerest condolences go out to the family and friends of the teenager tragically killed this morning." At this point, no further details regarding the incident are available.

In response to the devastating event, the school district issued a statement, characterizing the day as an exceedingly challenging one. They have arranged for grief counselors to be present at the school's campus this week, offering support to both students and faculty members in need.
