Tragedy struck last week when Yowhannes Tewelde, a store clerk in San Francisco, lost his life after being viciously assaulted by a robber. Tewelde's family shared the heartbreaking news that he passed away shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday. FOX San Francisco reports that they have been in touch with Tewelde's family for further details.
The 60-year-old Tewelde was targeted in an attack at a market located in the Outer Richmond District. The incident unfolded when a robber struck him during a robbery attempt.
Tewelde's daughter, Meron Tewelde, recounted, "I was at home when I received a call from my mom, informing me that my dad was in the hospital. I didn't realize the severity of the situation until now."
During his attempt to thwart the thief, Tewelde suffered a brain injury. The owner of the market revealed that the suspect first stole water and then returned after ten minutes to snatch two beers.
In a brave effort to stop the robber, Tewelde confronted him with a bat. However, the criminal knocked him down, causing Tewelde to hit his head on the ground. The assailant, still at large, used the bat to strike Tewelde before making his escape from the scene.
Tewelde underwent two surgeries in an attempt to save his life, but unfortunately, he never regained consciousness.
Tewelde's family shared that he had undergone heart surgery in March and had recently become an American citizen merely eight weeks before the tragic incident.
Meron expressed, "Right after his heart surgery, he didn't hesitate to return to work because of his dedication to the community. He felt a deep connection with everyone there."
The loss of Yowhannes Tewelde has left the community in shock and mourning. The incident highlights the vulnerability faced by those who stand up against crime.
