Seafaring Bandits Create Havoc in San Francisco Bay: Residents Take Matters into Their Own Hands

Residents living on houseboats and yachts in the San Francisco Bay are facing a dire situation, as they find themselves resorting to physical confrontations with seafaring bandits who are ransacking their vessels. According to former harbor master Brock de Lappe, the situation has reached intolerable levels. He expressed his concerns during a recent municipal meeting.

Pirates Plague the Oakland-Alameda Estuary

Since the summer, burglars have been using small boat homes to raid yachts and houseboats in the Oakland-Alameda Estuary, which houses more than 3,000 slips. These pirates steal valuable items and often sink the ships or abandon them miles away in the Oakland Harbor or along its shorelines.

Personal Anecdotes Paint a Grim Picture

Residents in the area have shared personal stories about the dire situation during a recent San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) enforcement meeting. One person, who chose to remain anonymous due to fears of retaliation, recalled hearing cries for help one night in the estuary.

"They're yelling, ‘Help me, please, please. Anybody help me.’ And I go out there in my kayak with a headlamp, and there is a sailboat drifting down the estuary, and with my kayak I towed it to shore," the anonymous woman said. On board was a panicked young man, who revealed that one of the "pirates" had cut his sailboat line during an argument.

Homeless Crisis Spills into the Waterways

Residents and the local municipal commission believe that these "pirates" are part of Oakland's escalating homeless crisis that has extended into the waterways. While the city of Alameda is considered a desirable suburban location, its neighbor, Oakland, grapples with homelessness, making it challenging for many to live there.

Law Enforcement's Response

Alameda Police Chief Nishant Joshi disclosed that his department is collaborating with the Oakland PD and the Coast Guard, which has a base in the estuary, to address this issue regionally. They face unique challenges, as the waterways lack clear boundaries and require a shared effort among law enforcement agencies.

While Alameda replenishes its police force, they are working closely with the Oakland PD, which has a marine unit, to ensure constant surveillance in the marinas and surrounding areas.

The situation remains a top concern for residents, and it is evident that immediate action is required to restore safety and peace in the San Francisco Bay.
