Rio de Janeiro Launches Police Operation to Tackle Crime in Three Neighborhoods

Early Monday, the state government of Rio de Janeiro initiated a significant police presence in three of the city's sprawling, low-income neighborhoods with the aim of cracking down on organized crime groups.

The security forces focused their efforts on the Mare complex of favelas near Rio's international airport, as well as the neighboring Vila Cruzeiro area and the City of God neighborhood on the opposite side of the city. All three areas are under the control of the Red Command drug trafficking group.

Recent intelligence had suggested that crime leaders had moved from Mare to the other two communities, according to Rio's government. They announced that a force of 1,000 officers took part in the operation.

Shortly after dawn, residents in these communities reported gunfire exchanges, as confirmed by the nonprofit organization Fogo Cruzado, which tracks gun violence in real-time. Local media outlet G1 reported that two police helicopters came under fire and were forced to land.

Rising Concerns Over Crime in Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro's state government has deployed a substantial number of police officers to address law enforcement concerns in three extensive and economically disadvantaged neighborhoods within the city.

Last week, Rio Governor Claudio Castro spoke about ongoing plans to combat organized crime groups that control large portions of territory.

"These individuals do not represent the law-abiding members of our community; they are violent, armed criminals. Dealing with them requires a firm and decisive response from the state," he emphasized.

In a tragic incident last week, three doctors were fatally shot at a beachside restaurant, with one of the victims apparently mistaken for the son of a local militia group.
