Tragic Shooting of College Student Ruled Justified Under South Carolina Law

A heart-wrenching incident has unfolded in South Carolina, where a college student's fatal shooting has been deemed lawful under the state's Stand Your Ground law. This law permits residents to protect themselves and their property using firearms. The Columbia Police Department (CPD) decided not to press charges against the individual who shot Nicholas Donofrio, a 20-year-old University of South Carolina student from Connecticut.

Chief W.H. "Skip" Holbrook of the CPD expressed deep sympathy for all those involved, acknowledging the sorrowful nature of the case. After thorough investigation, the CPD, in consultation with the Fifth Circuit Solicitor’s Office, determined that the shooting was justified under the Protection of Persons and Property Act. Evidence collected from the scene, including surveillance footage, audio recordings, and witness statements, informed this conclusion.

College Student's Fatal Mistake Leads to Tragic Outcome

The unfortunate incident occurred in the early hours of August 26. Nicholas Donofrio mistakenly approached the wrong home on South Holly Street in Columbia. Repeatedly knocking, banging, and attempting to manipulate the door handle, he inadvertently entered the incorrect house. Donofrio, who also lived on South Holly Street, tragically chose the wrong doorstep.

A female resident at the address made a 911 call reporting a possible home invasion around 2 a.m. In response, a male resident retrieved a legally acquired firearm. Donofrio proceeded to break through a glass window on the front door, trying to unlock the doorknob through the broken glass. The male resident, faced with the potential threat, fired a single shot that fatally wounded Donofrio in the chest.

Upon arriving at the scene, the police found Donofrio deceased on the front porch.

A Life Remembered

Nicholas Donofrio was remembered fondly by his family and friends. He pursued a degree in exercise science at the University of South Carolina and was a member of the Kappa Phi Sigma fraternity. His loved ones described him as a compassionate, intelligent, and humorous individual who cared deeply for others. While his time with them was brief, his impact on their lives was significant.

In memory of Nicholas Donofrio, members of his fraternity created a GoFundMe page to assist with his funeral services. The description emphasized his positive influence on those around him and his honorable character.
