Home Intruder Shot: Ohio Murder Suspect Arrested

Fayette County, Georgia - An Ohio man wanted for the murder of a 77-year-old woman faced a dramatic turn of events when he attempted a home invasion in Georgia. Michael James Brooks II, hailing from Columbus, Ohio, was shot by a homeowner defending his family during the intrusion. The Fayette County Sheriff's Office confirmed this incident.

Brooks now finds himself hospitalized with injuries sustained during the break-in. However, when he recovers from his medical treatment, he won't be going home; instead, he'll be facing charges for burglary, home invasion, and theft by receiving in Georgia. Furthermore, murder charges await him in Ohio, where he's wanted for the fatal stabbing of Emily Foster on September 9, 2023, in Columbus, Ohio, as well as for a carjacking incident involving a red Ford F-150 truck in Kettering, Ohio, which was later discovered outside the burglarized Georgia home.

Quick Police Response

The ordeal began when Fayette County Sheriff's Office deputies promptly responded to a burglary call at the residence shortly before 2 a.m. on a Thursday morning. A security alarm at the home had also alerted the police to a possible intruder.

With deputies just minutes away, the homeowner, armed with a firearm, confronted the intruder, who wielded a knife, in the basement of the house. The homeowner issued a warning before resorting to gunfire to protect his family.

Taking up a defensive stance on the second-floor staircase, the homeowner declared, "You’re going to have to kill me," and fired a second shot as the intruder ascended. Deputies arrived just as the intruder was descending with a second gunshot wound, leading to his eventual arrest.

Stolen Truck Connects the Dots

Police pieced together the puzzle by identifying the intruder as Brooks, connecting a stolen Ford truck found at the scene to the vehicle carjacked days earlier in Kettering, Ohio, complete with different license plates.

Investigators revealed that the targeted home in Georgia was chosen at random, raising questions about any potential connection between Brooks and the two states.

Random Attack in Ohio

In Columbus, Ohio, Brooks was identified as the perpetrator in the random stabbing death of Emily Foster on September 9, 2023, in the University District. Columbus police arrived at Foster's residence to find her fatally wounded from a stabbing. She succumbed to her injuries shortly after 4 p.m.

The investigation in Columbus also aims to uncover how Brooks arrived in the University District, with photos showing him biking through the area without pants after the deadly incident. Surveillance cameras played a vital role in tracking his movements and establishing a timeline.

Forensic evidence collected at Foster's home led to Brooks' identification and the issuance of murder warrants.

Troubled Past

Brooks' criminal history is extensive, including convictions for aggravated robbery, robbery, and receiving stolen property. He was released from prison in 2016, according to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections, and had been on parole until June of the current year.
