Butterfly Smuggler Faces Charges

A man from New York is in hot water with the law for allegedly sneaking rare and protected butterflies worth over $200,000 into and out of the United States. He used online marketplaces like eBay and Etsy to do it.

The 75-year-old, Charles Limmer, has been charged with smuggling fancy butterflies from around the world between October 2022 and September 2023. These aren't your average butterflies; we're talking about the "birdwings," which are big and endangered.

Serious Accusations

Limmer is accused of teaming up with people overseas to secretly bring in about 1,000 insects, some of which are among the rarest and most endangered moths and butterflies on the planet. To hide what he was up to, he told his partners to pretend the butterfly packages were things like "decorative wall coverings" or "origami paper craft."

Breaking the Law

Here's the deal: it's against the law to move wildlife in and out of the United States without getting the green light from the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). If the animals are endangered, there are even more rules to protect them from getting into the wrong hands.

Caught in Action

A look at Limmer's online sales history on eBay and Etsy shows he was quite busy. He made thousands of sales, with many of them being moths and butterflies. On Etsy, there were even ads for birdwings, selling for about $133.

Now, the authorities want Limmer to give up his collection of more than 1,000 illegally trafficked butterflies, moths, and other insects. If he's found guilty, he could be looking at up to 20 years behind bars.
