Nashville Police Fatally Shoot Man Holding Housemate Hostage

In a tense encounter in Nashville, police were forced to take down a man who had reportedly taken a housemate hostage with a knife. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation provided details of the incident, stating that things took a dire turn late on Monday night.

The dispute unfolded within a home, leading to a man holding another individual hostage. Metro Nashville Police swiftly responded to the situation. Initially, officers attempted to engage with the suspect from behind a door, but their decision to enter the room was spurred by the sound of distress.

As events transpired, a 30-year-old man named Joshua Kersey approached the officers while brandishing a large knife. In response, an officer was compelled to use lethal force, resulting in Kersey's unfortunate demise. Importantly, none of the officers suffered any injuries during the incident.

Officer Identifed as Shooter

Metro Nashville Police identified the officer responsible for the fatal shot as Officer Cole Ranseen. The department revealed that its officers had made extensive efforts to negotiate with Kersey for nearly 40 minutes, speaking to him through the closed bedroom door. However, when the officers heard signs of a struggle within the room, they took immediate action.

Officer Ranseen, alongside his colleagues, breached the door and subsequently opened fire as Kersey engaged in a physical altercation with the housemate.

Events Leading to the Confrontation

The predicament began when Kersey's sister reached out for assistance. Her brother had taken her vehicle keys while inebriated, driven away, and subsequently returned. This return led to a heated altercation involving family members, including his mother, sister, and four children. Fortunately, they had vacated the premises before the officers entered.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the precise nature of Kersey's connection to the hostage. Investigations into the shooting are still ongoing, and more information is expected to be released in the coming hours.
