Hiker's Remains Found Seven Years After Disappearance in Idaho Backcountry

After a mysterious disappearance lasting seven years, the remains of a 66-year-old hiker, Jack Thomas, have been located in the Idaho backcountry. The discovery was confirmed by authorities on Monday.

Back in June 2016, Jack Thomas went missing while hiking near the Queen’s River trailhead in the Sawtooth Mountains. Despite a two-week search effort by the Boise County Sheriff’s Office, no signs of the hiker were found at that time.

Recently, a break in the case emerged when fellow hikers exploring the Sawtooth Range discovered a wallet, clothing, and a hiking boot believed to belong to Jack Thomas. These findings were brought to light last month, providing a glimmer of hope to the ongoing search.

As search teams ventured further into the area near Benedict Lake, where the initial items were found, additional belongings like an ice axe, iPod, and cellphone were uncovered. Eventually, the search led to the discovery of skeletal remains, a day pack, and a satellite GPS device, according to Boise County Sheriff’s Detective Max Sprague.

The remains were located roughly half a mile away from the trail itself. Detectives speculate that Jack Thomas might have veered off the trail to explore nearby mountain lakes when an unfortunate incident occurred, rendering him incapacitated.

Confidence is high among officials, with Sheriff Scott Turner expressing a 99.9% certainty that the remains belong to Jack Thomas.

Boise County Coroner Pam Garlock shared her assessment, suggesting that Thomas likely fell and succumbed to hypothermia. Thomas was known as an experienced hiker who enjoyed solo adventures in the backcountry. The news of the discovery brought a sense of closure to his wife, who expressed that if everything had been found sooner, she would have chosen to lay him to rest in a place he cherished.

The hiker's story is a reminder of the unpredictable nature of outdoor exploration, and the importance of preparedness and safety when venturing into the wilderness.
