Communities in Massachusetts Issue Warnings about Coyote Encounters

Several Massachusetts communities are urging residents and dog-walkers to stay cautious due to a series of aggressive interactions with coyotes.

In Hopkinton, a town situated 32 miles west of Boston, police reported an incident where a coyote grabbed one of a woman's dogs while she was walking them on Thursday. Another case occurred in Milford, close to Hopkinton, where a coyote seized a dog named "Guido" from Pine Island Road on Wednesday morning, according to animal control officials.

These incidents come after an earlier occurrence in Fall River, a city approximately 55 miles south of Boston, where a coyote attacked a woman earlier in the week. Furthermore, residents in the Boston neighborhood of Jamaica Plain raised concerns this month after spotting a coyote carrying a small dog's body.

Heightened Vigilance Required for Dog Walkers

As reports of coyotes snatching pets increase, dog walkers all over Massachusetts have been cautioned to be extra watchful during the times around dawn and dusk.

Milford's animal control officials posted on Facebook, advising residents to exercise heightened caution during these hunting times, when coyotes are most active. Hopkinton's police also suggested that residents consider carrying a walking stick for added protection. They empathized with the loss of pets, acknowledging that they are cherished members of families.

Growing Concern over Urban Coyotes

Coyotes have become a growing nuisance in both urban and suburban areas of Massachusetts in recent years. Last year, the town of Nahant made a unique decision by becoming the first in the state to collaborate with the federal government to control the coyote population through targeted removal.
