Florida Roller Coaster Reopens After 6-Year-Old's Fall

A roller coaster in Florida has reopened, nearly two months following a distressing incident where a 6-year-old boy fell from the ride. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has officially given the green light for the Galaxy Spin, a roller coaster designed in a "wild mouse" style, to resume operations.

In an official statement, the agency confirmed, "The department allowed for the reopening of the Galaxy Spin ride after conducting a thorough investigation." This investigation concluded that the ride had adhered to all safety requirements and the manufacturer's operational guidelines.

The unfortunate incident occurred at Fun Spot America's Kissimmee location on the afternoon of August 3, 2023. The child fell approximately 20 feet below the roller coaster's track, sustaining severe injuries, as reported by the Osceola County Fire Rescue Department.

During a 911 call, an individual described the situation, saying, "The child fell off the ride. Right now, we have him on the floor. They're screaming. We're trying our best not to move them. He's bleeding from his lip, and the top corner of his head is very swollen. And, um, I believe something with his hip, but I'm not too sure."

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, responsible for consumer protection, has now mandated two precautionary changes to the ride. First, any child under the age of 10 must be accompanied by a person who is at least 14 years old. Additionally, enhanced safety messages and signage have been added around the ride to ensure visitor awareness.

The park had previously expressed its concern and well wishes for the injured child, stating, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the child and their family, and we pray for a speedy recovery. The safety of our guests is our number one priority."
