Florida Mother Faces Child Neglect Charges After Leaving Toddler in Running Vehicle

In a concerning incident, a Florida mother, Allison Daugherty, aged 41, has found herself facing child neglect charges. The reason? She allegedly left her toddler son unattended in a running vehicle while she went swimming in the ocean, claiming she wanted to "meet sharks." Here's what happened in simple terms:

What Happened:On a Monday morning, near the Bokeelia Fishing Pier, a witness spotted Daugherty. She had parked her SUV, cranked up the radio, and then went for a dip in the ocean. The witness was about to witness something unexpected.

Around 20 minutes later, the passerby noticed a two-year-old boy inside the running vehicle with the air conditioning on. They called 911 immediately.

While talking to 911, the witness saw Daugherty swimming away from the pier. The Lee Controls Fire and emergency medical services were quick to respond.

Rescue Operation:A detective arrived and checked on the child, who seemed okay. Meanwhile, Daugherty kept swimming away from the pier. The detective used binoculars to keep an eye on her. After about 20 minutes, the Boca Grande Marine Unit reached her and brought her back to shore.

Daugherty was detained for her actions.

Strange Behavior:A witness reported that Daugherty was swimming among people who were fishing, and they tried to warn her about hooks and sharks in the water. Instead of heeding the warning, she reportedly shouted back that she "wanted to get hooked" and "wanted to meet sharks."

Duration of Neglect:Shockingly, Daugherty left her toddler alone in the car for about 44 minutes, according to the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

Legal Consequences:As of Wednesday morning, Daugherty remained in custody, facing charges of child neglect for leaving her child unattended in a vehicle for more than 15 minutes. Her bond has been set at $250, and she is scheduled to appear in court on October 2.
