Former Baltimore Mayor Announces 2024 Mayoral Run After Past Conviction

A former mayor of Baltimore, Sheila Dixon, convicted of embezzlement over a decade ago, has declared her candidacy for the city's mayoral race in 2024.

Dixon, a Democrat, left her role as Baltimore's mayor in 2010 amidst a corruption case scandal. She resigned as part of a plea agreement related to allegations of misusing gift cards intended for charity at City Hall. Approximately $500 from these funds was spent on personal items at Target and Best Buy for her family and staff.

In an op-ed published in The Baltimore Sun, Dixon expressed remorse for her previous actions and officially announced her third mayoral bid, following two unsuccessful attempts since her resignation.

"I have made personal mistakes in the past, including a misdemeanor charge that led to my resignation from the job I cherished the most," she wrote. "I allowed matters of the heart to lead me astray in the past, and for that, and the pain it caused to my beloved Baltimore, I am deeply sorry. I hope the people recognize that my commitment to Baltimore's future is greater than the mistakes of my past."

Dixon, Baltimore's first female mayor, highlights her achievements in tackling violent crime, road maintenance, and neighborhood revitalization during her tenure. Notably, the city's homicide rate decreased, and arrests declined during her leadership.

She will face the incumbent Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott in the Democratic primary for a second term.
