Daring Bridge Rescue: 19-Year-Old Saved from 700-Foot Peril

In a heart-pounding rescue operation, authorities in California came to the aid of a 19-year-old who found himself dangling perilously, some 700 feet above the ground, beneath the state's highest bridge.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office deployed two specialized units, working in tandem, to lower a first responder to the stranded individual on the Foresthill Bridge, just outside Sacramento. They managed to bring him safely back up to the catwalk.

Investigation revealed that the 19-year-old and his 17-year-old friend were engaged in a risky filming venture, swinging from underneath the bridge. Tragedy struck when the 19-year-old's equipment malfunctioned, leaving him hanging about 30 feet from the catwalk's underside. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, his friend promptly dialed 911 for help.

Over 24 first responders, including members of CAL FIRE, collaborated in the rescue effort on that fateful Monday night.

Thankfully, the 19-year-old was assessed by medics at the scene and declined any medical attention as he had no apparent injuries. Nevertheless, both individuals were cited for trespassing on the Foresthill Bridge.

The incident took place on the Foresthill Bridge, a structure that spans a breathtaking 2,428 feet over the North Fork of the American River. It ranks as the third highest bridge in the United States and stands as California's tallest, soaring to an impressive 730 feet.

Visitors to the Placer County area can explore the bridge, adorned with decades of homemade inscriptions left by passersby, many commemorating past and present relationships. Movie buffs may also recognize the bridge from the 2002 film 'xXx,' where Vin Diesel's character embarks on a daring car jump off the bridge, deploying a parachute to descend into the American River Canyon. However, it's important to note that such stunts are best left to Hollywood, as they are not recommended in reality.
