President Biden Walks in Silence Amid Son's Tax Charges
President Biden strolled across the White House's South Lawn on Friday, brushing off reporters' questions about his son Hunter's recent indictment on federal tax charges. The charges, handed down by DOJ Special Counsel David Weiss, allege a "four-year scheme" where Hunter did not pay federal income taxes from January 2017 to October 2020, alongside filing false tax reports.
"Have you spoken to your son? Any comment on the new charges against your son, Mr. President?" shouted reporters as Biden headed to Marine One for a trip to Las Vegas, Nevada. Biden, however, just waved and continued walking.
Hunter faced similar questions outside his California home, including speculation about a potential pardon from his father. Ignoring the queries, he got into a car and drove away.
The charges against Hunter comprise three felonies and six misdemeanors, centered around $1.4 million in owed taxes that have now been paid. Weiss accused Hunter of a "four-year scheme" to evade taxes and alleged he "subverted the payroll and tax withholding process" of his company, Owasco, PC.
Weiss claimed that Hunter spent millions on an extravagant lifestyle instead of paying taxes and stopped paying overdue taxes for the year 2015. Additionally, he willfully failed to pay taxes on time for 2016 to 2019, despite having the funds, and filed false business deductions in 2018 to reduce tax liabilities.
These developments precede an anticipated House Republican vote next week on a measure to initiate an impeachment inquiry into President Biden over potential ties to his son's business dealings.
