Greek Military Team Mourns Loss of Members in Tragic Libya Accident

Greece's armed forces have declared three days of national mourning in a solemn acknowledgment of a tragic incident in flood-hit Libya. This unfortunate event resulted in the loss of five lives belonging to a military rescue team.

Fallen Heroes Return Home

In the early hours of Monday, the bodies of the fallen heroes, including three military officials and two civilians, were brought back to a military base near Athens. At the same time, 13 injured team members received medical care in military hospitals within the Greek capital.

The Unfortunate Collision

The heart-wrenching incident took place when a bus, carrying the Greek rescue team, collided on its way to the flood-affected city of Derna in Libya. Regrettably, this accident also claimed the lives of three Libyan individuals, as confirmed by Libyan authorities.

President's Condolences

Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou extended her heartfelt condolences, expressing, "We are all shocked by the deaths of rescuers who were participating in a humanitarian mission to show solidarity with the suffering Libyan people. I am deeply saddened by their unexpected death."

Nature's Fury Unleashed

The catastrophe unfolded as a result of heavy rainfall triggered by the Mediterranean storm Daniel, which had caused extensive flooding in eastern Libya just one week prior. This deluge overwhelmed two dams, unleashing a devastating torrent that swept through the coastal city of Derna. The consequences were dire, with over 11,000 lives tragically lost, and more than 10,000 individuals still missing and presumed deceased. Entire neighborhoods were obliterated as floodwaters carried away bridges, vehicles, and even people out to sea.

A Widespread Impact

Prior to wreaking havoc in Libya, the same storm had already caused significant damage in central Greece. This left numerous areas submerged and grappling with the aftermath of this natural disaster.
