Tragic Incident Claims Young Boy's Life as Shoelaces Snare Him Under Van's Wheels

A heartbreaking incident unfolded as a five-year-old boy lost his life after becoming entangled in the wheels of a van due to his caught shoelaces, according to recent court proceedings.

Layton Darwood, the young victim, met with this unfortunate accident when he was caught under a Ford Transit Tipper's trailer in Fenham, Newcastle. The incident occurred in August 2020.

Layton was rushed to the hospital with grave injuries following the incident. Despite the efforts made to save him, he tragically succumbed to his injuries, leaving his family devastated.

The driver of the van, Darren Jacques, has been charged in connection with the boy's death. It has been revealed that Jacques was disqualified from driving at the time of the incident. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is currently undergoing trial.

During the ongoing trial at Newcastle Crown Court, it was disclosed that Layton and three other children had visited a shop to buy treats and food for a picnic. Simultaneously, Jacques had parked his work van on the sidewalk near the shop and was inside purchasing alcohol.

In recorded testimony, one of the children who was present, and whose identity remains protected due to legal reasons, shared details of the sequence of events. The child mentioned that Layton ventured off and began climbing onto the van's trailer.

The young witness recalled, "As I entered the shop and tried to make a card payment, it wasn't accepted. We were planning to go to another store. Meanwhile, Layton ran ahead to the truck's trailer and started climbing on it. The trailer unexpectedly began moving, prompting me to rush and pull Layton away. However, he got caught, possibly by his shoelaces, and was dragged beneath the wheels."

"I hurried to inform the person in the van, who then called for an ambulance," the child recounted.

The child further stated that Jacques responded with exclamations of distress and apologies upon learning that Layton was trapped beneath the vehicle.

Layton suffered facial abrasions and was assisted by a passerby before being swiftly transported to the hospital, as revealed by the testimony.

The child also expressed surprise, noting that Layton's actions were uncharacteristic since climbing onto the trailer was not something he usually did.

The trial is ongoing, as the court continues to deliberate on the circumstances of this tragic incident.
