Washington deputy crawls into pipe to rescue injured dog

Deputy in Heroic Rescue of Injured Dog from Culvert

A heartwarming tale of bravery and compassion unfolded in Washington state on September 7th. In a daring rescue captured on video by the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy went to extraordinary lengths to save an injured dog that had been struck by a car.

The clock approached 10 p.m., and animal control couldn’t reach the scene in time. Faced with a desperate situation, our deputy decided to take matters into his own hands. He shed his gear and courageously entered the narrow culvert, where the injured dog was trapped.

The gripping video shows the deputy’s determination as he made his way towards the distressed pup inside the pipe. When he reached the dog, a heartwarming moment unfolded as the canine companion nestled against the deputy, seeking comfort and assurance.

With utmost care and a blanket as a lifeline, the deputy pulled the injured dog out of the culvert. The immediate priority was getting the dog to an emergency vet. After a thorough examination, it was revealed that the dog, affectionately named “Piper,” required urgent surgery. Heartbreakingly, Piper was a stray without a known owner or a microchip.

In a twist of fate, Piper’s life took a hopeful turn. The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office, learning of Piper’s impending euthanasia, made a plea to the vet’s office. Much to their relief, it was discovered that a compassionate deputy who had been present during Piper’s rescue had already reached out to the vet, requesting the necessary surgery.

Thanks to the support of Sheriff Ed Troyer and the dedicated team at People for Animal Care and Kindness, Piper’s emergency surgery expenses were covered.

Piper’s initial reluctance to leave the culvert gave way to the promise of a second chance at life. As Piper continues her recovery, the question of whether a loving family will come forward to provide her with a forever home remains unanswered.

This heartwarming rescue serves as a reminder that compassion knows no bounds. The deputies who undertook this courageous mission have shown remarkable kindness and heroism. Without their intervention, Piper would likely have remained trapped beneath the road, facing a bleak fate.
