Voice Assistants Fail to Provide CPR Instructions | Tech Shortage

Voice Assistants Struggle with Critical CPR Instructions, Study Finds

Voice assistants have become an integral part of our daily lives, delivering weather updates, playing requested songs, and even aiding in impromptu trivia sessions. However, a recent study highlights a significant limitation in these virtual aides: their ability to provide accurate instructions for performing CPR.

In situations where seconds can be a matter of life and death, voice assistants like Siri and Alexa might seem like convenient sources of guidance for bystanders. Yet, the study conducted in the United States reveals a concerning reality.

When faced with critical questions, such as how to administer CPR, many voice assistants fell short. Responses ranged from admitting they lacked the necessary information to outright misunderstanding the inquiry. One particularly quirky reply was, “Words fail me.”

Even more perplexing was the response that provided a translation-related answer: “The Indian Penal Code.”

Out of the 32 responses generated by various voice assistants, a mere nine emphasized the importance of calling emergency services for immediate assistance. Although some users were occasionally directed to websites explaining CPR techniques, the majority of voice assistants failed to provide clear verbal instructions.
