Unlicensed Acupuncturist Charged After Patient’s Lung Collapse

A New York City man is facing serious charges for practicing acupuncture without a license, leading to a terrifying ordeal for his patient. In an alarming incident, a 63-year-old woman had her lungs punctured during one of these unauthorized treatments, forcing her into emergency surgery. Let’s break down what happened.

The Accused
Yong De Lin, aged 66, found himself in a courtroom, facing four criminal charges. These charges stem from unlicensed acupuncture sessions he conducted on Shujuan Jiang, the 63-year-old victim. The Queens District Attorney, Melinda Katz, revealed this shocking case.

The Timeline
Jiang sought relief from stomach and back pain and, on May 10, 2022, visited a medical office in the Flushing section of Queens. It was there that she met Lin. Over the following months, Lin administered a total of 17 acupuncture treatments, even though he had never obtained a license to practice acupuncture in the state of New York.

The Critical Moment
As the treatments continued, Jiang’s health took a dangerous turn during her final session on October 28. At this session, Lin not only performed acupuncture but also attempted a cupping treatment. Afterward, he sent Jiang home, unaware of the severe consequences his actions would have.

A Dire Situation
Jiang collapsed on the sidewalk while making her way home. A concerned passerby quickly dialed 911, and she was rushed to the hospital. Medical professionals determined that both of her lungs had collapsed due to the acupuncture treatments. She underwent life-saving surgery and spent six days hospitalized, fighting for her life.

The Implications
Prosecutor Melinda Katz issued a stark warning, emphasizing the life-and-death difference between receiving healthcare from a licensed professional and an unlicensed one. She stated that Lin’s actions had put his patient’s life in grave danger.

Legal Consequences
Lin now faces serious charges, including first and second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, and unauthorized practice of a profession. His next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday. As for Lin’s attorney, Kathleen Gallo, no comment has been received at the time of this report.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of seeking healthcare services from licensed professionals who adhere to the highest standards of safety and competence.
