UNC Ph.D. Student Appears in Court Following Fatal Campus Shooting

Tailei Qi, a Ph.D. student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, appeared in court on Tuesday after being charged with the fatal shooting of an associate professor on campus.

Qi allegedly used a 9mm pistol to murder Zijie Yan, an associate professor in the Department of Applied Physical Sciences, prompting a lockdown as students began their classes.

The 34-year-old Chinese citizen, facing charges of first-degree murder and gun possession on campus, appeared in an orange jumpsuit before an Orange County judge.

The suspect was denied bond, with a probable cause hearing set for September 18.

Around 1 p.m., shots were fired at Caudill Laboratories, where Yan was found dead. Qi was taken into custody around 2:30 p.m. The university canceled classes for the day and the following day.

Qi could face life in prison if convicted.
