Iconic Tree at Sycamore Gap Felled by 16-Year-Old

A centuries-old tree at Sycamore Gap in Northumberland National Park, UK, met its untimely end in the early hours of Thursday, leading the police to apprehend a 16-year-old suspect. This famous tree, situated near Hadrian’s Wall, gained international recognition as it graced the screen in the 1991 movie, “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.”

A Storied History

Hadrian’s Wall, which the tree overlooked, dates back to 122 A.D. when it was constructed during the Roman Empire’s reign. Emperor Hadrian himself ordered its construction during his visit to Britain.

The now-fallen tree, although not as ancient as the wall, carried an estimated age of 200 to 300 years, as reported.

A Shocking Discovery

On that fateful Thursday morning, images emerged of the majestic tree lying on its side, separated from its distinctive heart-shaped stump. Northumberland National Park Authority issued a statement regarding the incident.

“Northumberland National Park Authority can confirm that sadly, the famous tree at Sycamore Gap has come down overnight. We have reason to believe it has been deliberately felled,” the statement expressed. “We are working with the relevant agencies and partners with an interest in this iconic North East landmark and will issue more details once they are known.”

A World-Renowned Landmark Lost

The Northumbria Police Department swiftly initiated an investigation, vehemently denouncing this act of vandalism. They made a commitment to bring those responsible to justice, emphasizing the global significance of the tree.

“The tree is a world-renowned landmark, and the vandalism has caused shock and anger throughout the local community and beyond,” the department stated.

Police clearly stated that this was a deliberate act of violence. Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner, Kim McGuinness, expressed her devastation over the loss, saying, “That tree was ours. It was an iconic North East landmark standing tall in our beautiful Northumberland. I am incandescent that this looks like a deliberate act of vandalism. I’ll be raising this personally today. I know Northumbria Police are at the scene, and officers will do their utmost to catch whoever is behind this. Terrible news.”

Later in the day, the police took a 16-year-old boy into custody in connection with the incident. He remained in custody, cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
