Pirate-Inspired Flag Flies High on New U.S. Navy Destroyer

A fresh breeze of maritime creativity was on full display last month when a brand-new U.S. Navy destroyer set sail with a flag that would make even Blackbeard himself proud. Docked at Pearl Harbor, the USS Carl M. Levin, named in honor of the late Senator from Michigan renowned for his military expertise, showcased a flag that combined elements of adventure and resilience.

The flag, as reported by Military.com, boasts an intriguing trio of symbols: a pirate ship, a phoenix, and a kraken. This imaginative creation was the brainchild of Damage Controlman 3rd Class Hector Mendoza, who designed the flag to pay homage to both real and fantastical aspects of the naval journey.

Depicting a daring clash between a sea monster and a pirate ship, the flag captures the moment when the mythical kraken splits the ship into two, while a phoenix majestically emerges from the wreckage. The imagery symbolizes the crew’s unwavering spirit to overcome challenges and emerge stronger from adversity.

“When I explain to family and friends my job here in the Navy, sailing the seven seas, I enjoy the heritage and the history [whether it be fact or fiction] that comes along with the job title,” Mendoza shared with Military.com, highlighting the rich tapestry of seafaring tradition.

Ensign Anastasiya Dudaryk, a spokesperson for the Levin, explained that the phoenix’s rise from destruction mirrors the ship’s resilience in the face of hardships. Mendoza’s intention was clear – crafting a flag that exudes sheer awesomeness.

Among several proposed battle flag ideas from fellow sailors, Mendoza felt that none captured the essence of what a battle flag should be. “I just wanted to design a pretty badass battle flag to display for everyone to see,” he revealed, encapsulating his determination to create a visual representation that stood out.

The USS Carl M. Levin, a member of the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer group, was commissioned in Baltimore on June 24. Since then, it has sailed with pride, showcasing its unique flag as a symbol of courage, resilience, and a touch of seafaring legend.
