Minks Released From Pennsylvania Fur Farm: Police Investigation Underway
In an unusual incident, thousands of minks were set free from a fur farm located in central Pennsylvania. The culprits responsible for this act breached the farm’s fence, leading to the release of the animals.
The incident came to the attention of law enforcement when troopers from the Stonington barracks in Northumberland County received a call. They rushed to the scene at the Richard H. Stahl Sons Inc. farm in Rockefeller Township, just outside Sunbury. This occurred shortly after noon on a Sunday.
Upon arriving at the farm, authorities learned that the fence had been tampered with during the early hours of the same Sunday. The result? Approximately 6,000 to 8,000 minks were suddenly at large. A joint effort involving various state agencies and farm personnel is now underway to recapture these animals.
The Sunbury Animal Hospital issued a warning on its Facebook page, alerting the public about the situation. They cautioned that the minks, while adorable, should not be approached as they can be aggressive. It’s essential to remember that these creatures are not suitable as pets or for rescue missions. If you encounter one, the best course of action is to keep a safe distance and ensure your own pets stay indoors if possible.
Regarding the incident, Mark Stahl, the owner of the Stahl fur farm, expressed uncertainty about what transpired. He issued a stern warning, advising people not to approach the released minks. An attempt to obtain a comment from the company by The Associated Press was made through email, but no response was received, and a telephone message could not be left.
State police have initiated a criminal mischief investigation and are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist in resolving the case.
In a heartening turn of events, Cassie Marks from Sunbury shared that she and others assisted in capturing four of the minks to return them to the hospital. She emphasized that they refrained from touching the animals, simply striving to lend a helping hand.
This incident bears resemblance to a similar occurrence last November in rural northwest Ohio when vandals released an estimated 10,000 minks on a farm. Although the initial estimate suggested a larger number, employees managed to corral many of the minks that remained on the property, which was situated less than 15 miles from the Indiana state line.
The situation took a grim turn as a significant number of minks lost their lives while crossing a nearby road. To deal with the unfortunate aftermath, a plow was brought in to clear away the carcasses.
As investigations unfold, the community remains vigilant, and authorities are determined to bring those responsible to justice.
