Shakira Shines at 2023 MTV Video Music Awards with Her Kids
Shakira turned heads at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, and her sons were the stars of the night. The 46-year-old singer dazzled in a gold Versace gown, matching it with golden Piferi platforms and gold jewelry as she graced the pink carpet at Newark’s Prudential Center in New Jersey on September 12.
But it wasn’t just Shakira who stole the show; her two sons, Milan, 10, and Sasha, 8, joined her, sporting matching black and gold tracksuits. They made quite the trio as Shakira was honored with the Video Vanguard Award and set to perform for the first time in over 15 years.
Speaking before the event, Shakira expressed her humility at receiving the award, hinting at an exciting performance, saying, “I tried to synthesize my entire career in, like, 10 minutes, so I did the best I could.”
Shakira shares her sons with Gerard Piqué, her partner of 12 years before their separation in June 2022. She revealed that the breakup had been tough on their children. She said, “I’ve tried to conceal the situation in front of my kids. I try to do it and to protect them because that’s my number one mission in life.”
Later, she opened up about dealing with rumors of Piqué having an affair while her father, William Mebarak Chadid, was hospitalized, saying, “My home was falling apart. I was finding out through the press that I had been betrayed while my dad was in the ICU.”
Since the split, Piqué has moved on with Clara Chia Marti, and in April, he made comments about Shakira’s fans, which she responded to with pride in her Latin American heritage.
In May, Shakira sparked romance rumors with Jimmy Butler, a 33-year-old Miami Heat player. They were spotted together in London two months later. A source suggested that their 13-year age difference didn’t bother Shakira, and while it was early days, she enjoyed spending time with him and appreciated his approach to their relationship.
While they are taking things slow, Shakira is open to seeing where her relationship with Butler goes, according to another insider.
