Notorious Colombian Serial Killer “The Beast” Dies
A Colombian serial killer, known as “The Beast,” who confessed to murdering over 190 children in the 1990s, passed away on Thursday in a hospital. He was 66 years old.
“The Beast’s” Dark Confession
Luis Alfredo Garavito, nicknamed “The Beast,” admitted to brutally ending the lives of children aged 8 to 16, mostly from low-income families. He used disguises like a monk, a homeless person, or a street vendor to kidnap and abuse his victims.
The End of “The Beast”
The National Penitentiary and Prison Institute reported that Garavito died in a hospital in Valledupar, Colombia, where he was imprisoned. The cause of death remains undisclosed.
A Dark Past Unveiled
Garavito was born in 1957 and traveled to 11 different parts of Colombia as an adult, committing his heinous crimes. Authorities began to connect the dots when they noticed patterns in the disappearances of children in Pereira, Armenia, and Tunja.
The Shocking Confession
In 1999, Garavito was arrested on an attempted rape charge. However, during an investigation, he confessed to the murders of 114 children, whose bodies were found in 59 towns across Colombia starting in 1994. He went on to admit to even more murders, totaling over 190 in his chilling confession.
A Glimpse of Remorse
In the same year, during a court hearing, Garavito apologized to the families of his victims, saying, “I want to ask for forgiveness for everything I did, and I am going to confess. Yes, I killed them and not only those, I killed others.”
The Controversial Possibility of Freedom
In recent years, there was speculation that Garavito might be released from prison after serving three-fifths of his sentence. However, in 2021, former President Iván Duque rejected the idea of his release, vowing that Garavito would remain behind bars during his government.
