Escaped Murder Suspect Flees Police Custody After Claiming Ankle Injury
An escaped murder suspect, known for his violent encounters with police, managed a daring escape from custody. On September 6th, 30-year-old Christopher Haynes was arrested, but his attempt to outsmart the authorities left them scrambling.
The Escape
After his arrest, police took Haynes to George Washington Hospital to address his claim of an ankle injury. While attempting to handcuff him to a gurney, Haynes overpowered an officer and fled, with just one shoe on.
"While an officer was changing out Haynes’ handcuffs at the hospital to cuff one hand to a gurney located in a hallway, Haynes physically assaulted the officer and fled from the hospital with one handcuff still attached to his right wrist," explained the Metropolitan Police.
Haynes managed to outrun two officers, leaving authorities in pursuit.
Campus Lockdown
The audacious escape led to George Washington University going into lockdown, urging students to shelter in place. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith launched an internal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape.
History of Violence
Christopher Haynes had a troubling history with law enforcement. Court records reveal prior guilty pleas for resisting arrest by force and a hit-and-run case, where he was tried in absentia. He faced accusations of failing to appear in court and violating pretrial release conditions in Prince William County, Virginia.
In another case, Haynes tried to run over three county bicycle officers with a car, leading to three counts of attempted malicious wounding of law enforcement officers. He escaped on foot, receiving a lenient two-year prison sentence, with most of it suspended.
Desperate Search for a Fugitive
Described as 6 feet tall and 205 pounds, with a "medium brown complexion," Haynes sports a Washington Nationals tattoo on his neck. He was last seen with shoulder-length dreadlocks, wearing a black shirt, gray shorts, white socks, and a handcuff dangling from his right wrist.
Haynes faces allegations of fatally shooting Brent Hayward on August 12 in Washington, D.C., leaving another victim severely injured.
Help Needed
Police are urging anyone with information about Haynes' whereabouts to call 202-727-9099 or text the tip line at 50411. A reward of $30,000 is being offered for assistance in capturing him.
In this daring escape and ensuing manhunt, Christopher Haynes has eluded the grasp of law enforcement, leaving a community on edge and authorities determined to bring him to justice.
