Dynasty Matriarch Suzanne Waterhouse Passes Away at 93, Surrounded by Beloved Family
Suzanne Waterhouse, the cherished matriarch of the renowned Waterhouse racing and bookmaking dynasty, has peacefully departed this world at the age of 93. Last week, Suzanne, known as Suzie, succumbed to a series of heart attacks, leaving a legacy of love and laughter behind.
In a heartfelt announcement on Sunday, Suzie’s son Robbie, the well-known bookmaker, shared the news on social media: “Sadly, we have lost the matriarch of our family, my mother Suzie Waterhouse. She passed away peacefully with her family by her side.”
Robbie, joined by his wife Gai and Louise’s husband, remembered Suzie’s all-encompassing love: “She was loved by all, her children, Gai & Gunther, her grandchildren & particularly her 5 great g’children. She lived her 93 years so fully & independently.”
A beacon of humor and warmth, Suzie’s remarkable spirit shone even during her final hours. Robbie recounted an endearing moment at the hospital: “Mum said to the nurses, ‘I’m obviously dying – Rob has never visited me before work in his life!'”
In another touching account, Robbie shared Suzie’s parting jest: “They decided, with our permission, to administer a painkiller which can hasten death. Mum asked what it was, I told [her]. She said, pointing her finger at me: ‘Et tu Brute,’ which is what Shakespeare has Caesar say to his best [friend] Brutus as he was stabbed. Mum laughed. What a star.”
Suzie Waterhouse, a loving figure in her family’s dynasty, now reunites with her husband ‘Big Bill’ Waterhouse, the renowned bookmaker. Big Bill, once the world’s largest bookmaker, passed away at 97 in November 2019, after an enduring 65-year marriage.
Suzie’s legacy encompasses not only her role as a supportive partner and nurturing mother but also her strength during challenges. Despite the infamous Fine Cotton racing incident, which deeply affected the family, Suzie found her signature humor intact: “If we’d had anything to do with it we would have painted the horse better,” she quipped, showing her resilience even in the face of adversity.
Suzie leaves behind a rich heritage, with children Robbie, David, Louise, and Gai continuing the family’s bookmaking and racing tradition. Her memory lives on through the Waterhouse dynasty’s accomplishments, cementing her role as the heart of a legacy built on love, laughter, and a touch of racing drama.
