Swimming Pier Collapse at University of Wisconsin-Madison Sparks Investigation
In a startling incident that unfolded on Labor Day, a swimming pier teeming with students and the public abruptly collapsed into Lake Mendota, resulting in multiple injuries. A video recording of the mishap captured the dramatic moment when the pier gave way, plunging the gathered crowd into the water.
As per the Madison Fire Department’s estimate, a crowd of 60 to 80 people had congregated on the pier before it buckled, prompting many to swim back to shore. While one person was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, five others sustained injuries and received prompt treatment from EMTs and paramedics on the scene, as reported by the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The incident unfolded around 2:35 p.m. on Labor Day, right in front of the Memorial Union on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. Importantly, there were no lifeguards on duty at the swimming area when the collapse occurred.
Responding to the situation swiftly, the University of Wisconsin-Madison mobilized the UW–Madison Police Department (UWPD), the Madison Fire Department, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin Union staff, and UW–Madison Dean of Students Christina Olstad to provide immediate first aid and assistance.
The university has taken steps to close the pier temporarily and has initiated an investigation into the incident. It’s noteworthy that the pier was scheduled for removal the following day, marking the end of the summer season.
Freshman Gabrielle Willbrandt, who was on the pier at the time of the collapse, recounted, “I turned to this one girl, and we were like, ‘Oh my God. Did that really just happen?'” Another witness, Nicole Mitchell, described the chaotic scene, stating, “It was really scary. It made a really loud noise at first, and then it was basically a fight or flight response. Me and my friend, who I was swimming, treading water with, we swam as fast as he could back to the dock. Everyone was screaming, looking for their things, making sure their friends were okay.”
The University of Wisconsin-Madison has initiated an investigation into the incident to determine the cause of the pier’s collapse.
