Thousands Sign Petition Urging University to Bar Student Accused of Newborn’s Death
More than 12,000 people have rallied behind a petition urging New Mexico State University at Las Cruces to prevent a 19-year-old student, Alexee Trevizo, accused of murdering her newborn, from attending classes.
Trevizo faced a harrowing incident when she gave birth to her son in an Artesia General Hospital bathroom on January 27. Tragically, the baby’s body was discovered in a trashcan shortly afterward.
Controversial Circumstances Surrounding the Case
Stillborn or Strangled? Trevizo contends that the baby was stillborn, claiming that the infant didn’t cry when born alone. However, prosecutors hold that she intentionally ended the baby’s life through strangulation.
The situation took a new turn when a judge altered her bail conditions, allowing her to physically attend university classes. This change triggered Evelyn Grasiano’s petition on Change.org, arguing that allowing a person facing such a serious charge to pursue higher education raises moral concerns.
The petition emphasizes that public trust and confidence in the justice system might be compromised if someone charged with a serious crime is given access to higher education.
Legal Twists and Turns
The saga grew more complex when another judge granted Trevizo the right to attend classes and interact with her boyfriend, who is also connected to the university. This decision, surprising due to the absence of domestic abuse allegations, sparked further controversy.
Trevizo’s legal defense maintains that the charges against her are unwarranted. They are striving not only to dismiss the charges but also to establish that the baby died before she gave birth.
Challenging Medical Assertions
Trevizo’s attorney, Gary Mitchell, disputes the prosecution’s claims vehemently. He argues that the tests used to determine the cause of death are outdated and that Trevizo didn’t strangle the baby. Mitchell alleges that Trevizo received an inappropriate cocktail of drugs during her pregnancy, including substances harmful to fetuses.
A Troubling Case of Uncertainty
Amid conflicting claims and medical interpretations, the case remains uncertain. Trevizo insists she didn’t know she was pregnant and the tragic events unfolded unexpectedly. Legal battles continue as both sides present their evidence.
The heart-wrenching case underscores the complexities of the justice system and the profound impact it can have on individuals’ lives. While legal proceedings unfold, the truth behind the baby’s passing remains a pivotal question that demands answers.
