NY police fatally shoot man in fencing mask after 54-year-old charges at officers with 2 swords

Police Shoot Man with Swords in Long Island

In a tense and dramatic incident on Long Island, New York, a police officer fatally shot a man who charged at authorities with two swords. Alan Weber, aged 54, tragically lost his life during the events in Elwood.

It all began with a 911 call reporting a man behaving violently inside a home. When the police arrived, Weber was found screaming and breaking things. He refused to come out, causing concern.

The Suffolk County officers entered the scene, and that’s when things took a dangerous turn. Weber confronted them while wearing a fencing mask and brandishing swords. Despite repeated commands to drop his weapons and an attempt to subdue him with a stun gun, Weber remained unyielding.

Ultimately, Weber charged at the officers, leading one of them to fire several shots. The officer’s name has not been disclosed. Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison later remarked, “I feel the officers had no other choice but to use what they had to use to stop the threat.”

It’s important to note that neighbors had called the police earlier that day when Weber was seen trying to open doors and take mail from houses in the neighborhood. Although police did respond, they did not take him into custody at that time.

As the community grapples with this tragic event, state and local authorities are investigating the shooting. Harrison, having reviewed officers’ body camera footage, currently believes that it was a justified shooting. The situation serves as a reminder of the challenges and dangers faced by law enforcement officers in their line of duty.
