New Jersey couple uncovers hidden stash of empty rum bottles behind basement wall: ‘It’s 5 o’clock somewhere’

New Jersey Couple Finds Hidden Trove of Rum Bottles in New Home

Cathy and Roy Aukamp, a couple in their early 50s, received an unexpected surprise while renovating their newly acquired home in New Jersey. Their basement had been drenched due to heavy storms, necessitating the removal of wet plasterboard. As they worked on the wall, something unusual tumbled out – empty Captain Morgan rum bottles.

Cathy Aukamp shared, “My husband had to remove wet plasterboard, and all these bottles came pouring out of one of the walls.”

In a video they later posted on Instagram, Roy Aukamp was visibly taken aback, shaking his head as dozens of liquor bottles lay strewn across the floor. Amidst the surprising discovery, Cathy playfully quipped, “Thirsty? It’s 5 o’clock somewhere!” The humorous moment garnered attention online.

The video gained traction, with many commenters expressing astonishment at the sheer number of rum bottles. One even humorously suggested, “You bought a house from Captain Morgan himself.”

Interestingly, the previous homeowners caught wind of the viral clip and reached out to the Aukamps. Cathy Aukamp revealed, “The person who did it saw the video after it went viral and reached out and said there are hundreds more but also that he is now three years sober.”

This discovery is just one among many peculiar finds hidden within homes. In California, an exterminator once stumbled upon approximately 700 pounds of acorns gathered by woodpeckers inside a wall.

In the realm of unexpected home surprises, the Aukamps’ rum bottle cache certainly stands out as a memorable one.
