Mysterious Tunnel Unearthed at Montenegro’s Courthouse
In a startling development, Montenegro’s President, Jakov Milatovic, has called for a thorough investigation into the discovery of an underground tunnel leading to a court storage area in the nation’s capital, Podgorica. This extraordinary incident, described as an attack on the state and its justice system, has left authorities scrambling to uncover the truth behind this audacious act.
The tunnel’s discovery came to light when court clerks noticed disturbances and felt an unusual draft in the storage area, sparking immediate concern. The passageway, stretching approximately 30 meters, was traced from an apartment building to the basement of the Higher Court facility across the street.
What makes this incident even more perplexing is the valuable content housed within the depot. Case files, as well as substantial quantities of drugs and weapons seized during criminal investigations, are securely stored in the courthouse basement. Police suspect that the tunnel’s creation may have sinister motives, including attempts by criminal groups to pilfer evidence or establish an escape route from the courthouse.
President Milatovic emphasized the need for accountability, saying, “I urge full responsibility and a full discovery. I hope it won’t be one of those cases when the public never gets a full picture. The tunnel is an attack on the justice system and on Montenegro itself.”
As the investigation unfolds, there are still many unanswered questions. Montenegrin media has reported the theft of weapons linked to a significant criminal gang, but official confirmation remains pending. Prosecutors are actively pursuing leads, seeking six individuals suspected of being involved in the tunnel’s construction. The Higher Court president has also been questioned in connection with the case.
The apartment from which the tunnel originated was leased several months ago, with authorities yet to reveal the identity of the renter or provide further details, except for the fact that no one was present when they investigated.
Montenegro’s police chief described this clandestine operation as “movie-style,” highlighting the extensive planning and execution involved in the tunnel’s construction, which took months.
This extraordinary incident has drawn comparisons to high-profile prison escapes, reminiscent of the escape made by former drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman from a maximum-security Mexican prison in 2015 through a tunnel from his cell.
Situated on the picturesque Adriatic Sea coast, Montenegro has been a notorious route for drug smuggling into Western Europe through the Balkans. As a NATO member and a candidate for European Union membership, the country has pledged unwavering commitment to combat crime and corruption, making this incident all the more perplexing and concerning for its leaders.
