Midwife Suspended Following Tragic Baby Death
A midwife has been suspended after a baby’s tragic death, raising concerns about her behavior during the unfortunate incident.
Yvonne Tasker, who worked at Scunthorpe General Hospital, was entrusted with the care of an expectant mother in 2017. Tragically, the baby passed away just a few hours after the mother’s admission to the hospital.
Tasker faced a hearing by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), where she was confronted with 21 charges. Most of the charges against her were upheld, including accusations that she displayed a lack of remorse.
The NMC panel highlighted Tasker’s responsibility as a midwife to maintain professionalism and trust with patients and their families. They stressed that patients should be able to place their trust in midwives’ expertise and integrity.
The panel’s ruling expressed concern that Patient A and her baby were put at risk due to Tasker’s misconduct. Her actions were found to breach essential principles of the midwifery profession, tarnishing its reputation.
Patient A, the mother, had an uncomplicated pregnancy without any alarming issues. She was admitted to the hospital for a labor assessment at 40 weeks, during which it was revealed that she was in labor. However, her blood pressure was elevated, and there were signs of elevated protein in her urine, which posed a risk.
Instead of involving the Obstetric Team (OT), as recommended for such cases, Tasker took over the situation. Tasker incorrectly categorized the patient as low risk and proceeded to break her waters artificially, claiming the mother had given consent. The panel’s findings revealed that Tasker’s claims were false and that the procedure required a doctor’s involvement, which had not been sought.
This incident has raised concerns about the level of care provided by midwives and emphasizes the need for maintaining professional standards and ensuring patient safety.
