Charges Dropped Against Man Who Brought Guns to Chicago Hotel Room
Prosecutors have decided to dismiss all serious charges against Keegan Casteel, a resident of Ankeny, Iowa. Casteel, who was arrested in 2021, had been facing felony charges after guns and ammunition were found in a hotel room he was staying in, overlooking a popular tourist spot in Chicago.
Casteel’s situation took an unexpected turn when he ended up with firearms and bullets in his Chicago hotel room. This incident led to his arrest by Chicago police back in July 2021. The weapons, including a rifle with a laser sight and a handgun, were discovered near a window on the 12th floor, providing a view of Ohio Street Beach and Navy Pier, a famous lakeside attraction.
The guns and ammo were found by a housekeeper who stumbled upon them while cleaning the room. When questioned by the authorities, Casteel explained that he hadn’t meant to alarm anyone. He had unintentionally left the firearms in his bag while packing for his trip to the city.
Casteel’s story took an interesting twist as it unfolded. He clarified that he had brought the weapons by mistake while preparing for a trip with his girlfriend and children. He had planned to propose to his girlfriend on the Ferris wheel at Navy Pier, making the occasion all the more memorable.
After his arrest, there was speculation about his intentions, but no concrete evidence emerged to support the idea that he had any malicious plans. Casteel’s attorney, Jonathan Brayman, criticized the way his client was portrayed in the media by city officials.
Ultimately, Casteel’s legal journey concluded with a misdemeanor plea for reckless conduct. As part of the resolution, he agreed to pay a $500 fine. This decision marked the end of his legal battle, allowing him to move forward with his life as an auto mechanic.
