Police Officer Critically Injured During Traffic Stop in Louisville
In a concerning incident early Thursday, a police officer in Louisville, Kentucky, was critically wounded during a routine traffic stop when gunfire erupted from a nearby residence.
The officer was conducting a traffic stop at approximately 2:30 a.m. in the 4000 block of Kentucky Street, as revealed by Louisville Metro Police Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel during a press conference.
During the encounter, the officer was struck in the torso by gunfire. Fortunately, another officer at the scene discharged their weapon in response but remained unharmed, Gwinn-Villaroel confirmed.
Around 8:30 a.m., authorities were observed taking two individuals into custody from the home near the incident, as reported by WDRB-TV. The identities of these individuals were not immediately disclosed.
The injured officer, who has been with the department for a year and a half, is currently in critical but stable condition. Chief Gwinn-Villaroel expressed hope for his swift recovery, urging for prayers and support.
Multiple specialized units, including the department’s hostage negotiation team and SWAT team, were deployed to the scene of the incident where the officer was targeted.
As the investigation unfolded, residents in the neighborhood were advised to remain indoors, ensuring their safety while the police carried out their work.
Chief Gwinn-Villaroel disclosed that bodycam footage of the incident would become available in 10 days, adhering to established protocols. However, no further details were immediately provided regarding the incident.
