Generous Gift Boosts Kansas High School

Topeka, Kansas: A heartwarming surprise came to Highland Park High School when it received a whopping $5 million donation from the estate of Susan Guffey, an alumna who passed away last year. This substantial gift, announced by the Topeka Public Schools Foundation, is aimed at enhancing the lives of students and enriching educational programs in this underprivileged Kansas neighborhood.

Unlike typical donations that often result in buildings bearing the donor’s name, Guffey’s legacy will be directed towards directly assisting the school’s students and programs, as reported by The Topeka Capital-Journal.

Changing Lives with a Generous Spirit

Pamela Johnson-Betts, the foundation’s executive director, expressed how this benevolent gesture will alleviate the financial burdens that some students previously faced. Many had to resort to bake sales and fundraisers to fund endeavors like out-of-state trips. Now, thanks to Guffey’s generosity, the foundation can confidently say, “Come to us. We have a pot of money that will make sure that the students we serve are going to be able to take every opportunity they want,” according to Johnson-Betts.

A Legacy Born in Anonymity

Susan Guffey, who spent her later years in the Seattle area, was known for her discreet acts of kindness. Her contributions to various programs were often done anonymously, reflecting her humble and caring nature.

Dale Cushinberry, a former principal of Highland Park High School, recounted his first meeting with Guffey over a decade ago. During her visit to the school, Guffey inquired about how she could assist. Cushinberry shared that the school’s goal was for every student to read three modern novels. To his surprise, the following week, a check arrived, promptly fulfilling that need and more. Additional generous gifts, including one for $200,000, followed suit. However, her final contribution stands as the largest in the history of Topeka’s school district.

A Testament to Determination

Pamela Johnson-Betts believes that Guffey’s remarkable generosity may be attributed to her upbringing. She suggests that many individuals hailing from the east side of town, where Guffey grew up, carry a strong desire to prove themselves. Johnson-Betts added, “A lot of times, people think that because you live in a certain ZIP code, you’re not as worthy as others.”
