Joe Jonas Adjusts Song Lyrics After Filing for Divorce from Sophie Turner
In a recent concert in Phoenix, Arizona, Joe Jonas made a subtle yet significant change to the lyrics of a Jonas Brothers ballad dedicated to his now-estranged wife, Sophie Turner. The 34-year-old singer modified the lyrics of “Hesitate,” a song that was originally written in her honor.
The original line from “Hesitate” went, “Don’t be scared because I’m on your side.” But during the concert, Joe Jonas crooned, “Don’t be scared because I’m on her side,” as seen in concert footage shared on X (formerly Twitter).
“Hesitate” was released in 2019 as part of the band’s album “Happiness Begins,” and Joe Jonas has openly discussed how the song was inspired by his love story with Sophie Turner, who is 27 years old.
“‘Hesitate’ is a song I wrote. It’s like my vows before I wrote my vows. It’s my promise to Sophie,” Joe revealed during the Jonas Brothers’ 2020 documentary, “Chasing Happiness.” He further shared that the song holds a special place in his heart, connecting deeply with their audience. “For me, it takes me to a whole other universe; I’m seeing her walk down the aisle again every time I close my eyes.”
Despite their marital troubles, Joe Jonas continued to perform “Hesitate” on The Tour, dedicating it to Sophie Turner on every occasion, even when she couldn’t attend due to her filming commitments in England.
However, amidst these emotional performances, Joe Jonas filed for divorce from Sophie Turner on September 5, one day before the lyric change in Phoenix. In a joint Instagram statement released on the same day, the couple confirmed their mutual decision to end their four-year marriage.
Their statement read, “After four wonderful years of marriage, we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives as to why, but truly, this is a united decision, and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children.”
According to a source, the couple had been facing challenges in their marriage for some time before making their decision public. “Friends could see there had been a disconnect between the two for a while now, and their connection just didn’t seem quite the same as it had been in the past,” the insider explained.
The divorce filing cited that their relationship was “irretrievably broken.” Despite the change in their relationship status, Joe Jonas has continued to sing the original lyrics of “Hesitate” during subsequent concerts with his brothers Kevin Jonas and Nick Jonas, including the show in Las Vegas on September 8.
Joe and Sophie, who wed in 2019, share two daughters, Willa, aged 3, and a second child, 14 months old, whose name remains private.
